Shawna,

Thanks for joining in the discussion. I know what you mean, but the problem is that if we don't actually start somewhere, nothing will ever get done. And that's a huge problem.

Peace - yes, much of this is down to leadership. But not only as it relates to the Third World. Western leaders could do so much more if they really wanted to. The point it, they don't. What's in it for them? The millions of starving in Africa don't vote for our leaders so why should our leaders care what happens to them - they don't really care what happens to us!

Lee. Yes, that's food for thought. (I particularly like the "no job" element and would have no problem in that area!)

Unfortunately, that solution would likely bring a whole host of other problems - robots and AI. The idea of a "slave" workforce is great as long as it really is unthinking, unfeeling, etc, but at some point robots will cross-over as we simply won't be able to help ourselves and not develop them to the best of our ability.

Sci-fi fans will have a field day posing all the pros anc cons of this argument but suffice it to say, at some point, we'd find ourselves with a whole new "human" rights dilemma.

Thanks for taking part in the conversation everyone.

the world is a great place for people who have it all and dont realize that there are millions of horrible situation happening around them and the world. i want to do something but i know that i would only help only a few of the billions that need help. oh how i wish the world could chang to a better world for the new generation. this cant happen when there are leaders in developing countrys who only care for them selves. we need new leaders who can deal with the big issues and save many lives.

I'm one of those crazy people who thing mechanization is the real answer, and with it a moneyless society. After all if our corporate friends are willing to send perfectly good jobs overseas, what's to stop them from giving them all to cheaper machines instead? Machines don't eat, sleep, smoke, fart, sexually harass, go home at the end of the day, form unions, ask why, say no, require sensitivity training... they can do things in places that humans dare not go. They can stay in bad conditions for long periods of time. Advanced enough machines can even repair other machines. We already have the diagnostic software, the next logical step is to build a mechanic bot for all the broken bots to come.
one day we are going to find ourselves sitting on our front porch, sipping coffee from our automatic coffee machine, admiring our new, free, mass produced ultra-light carbon fiber electric car powered by our new free solar shingles we had installed last week. Why is it all free? because Machines can do it all and they don't need the money! We will wonder why we ever had money!
All the resources can be gathered(and are today), processed (as they are today), and then made into products needed by the world for a nice middle class lifestyle now available to everyone as never before. Our only limitation is the requirement we lose our sense of greed.
Food can be grown in the now vacant office space in every city in the world, tended and harvested by robot gardeners.
All this can be acquired either online, (first come, first serve) or at the local supermarket, which will now become community space.
You will own your residence. If you want to move, you have to make arrangements with someone also willing to move. Construction will be done primarily by construction bots. No one need go hungry or go homeless ever again.
"but what will people do if they don't have a job?" is a very common question. I challenge you to answer it for yourself. I would rather you not answer it for me, and i pay the same curtosy to you. It's your life after all.
People behave badly when they are willfully ignorant of others and their problems, either because they don't care, or because they can't do anything about it. It gets worse when resources become scarce. People may feel bad deep down but will do anything to survive.
imagine a world where the only cost to getting anything you need anytime you want istime and space available in your home. what a happy world that would be. and it is soo close i can taste it.

That's very kind of you, Jonathan. Thank you. I'm pleased my post resonated with you. It is a subject I feel strongly about, as you can tell, so it's always heartening to hear that someone else sees the logic in my argument and that something as simple as a common sense approach to the world's problems could make an incredible impact.

If you want to check out my book, you've picked the best time possible - see the top post on the home page A Very Special Thank You ( http://www.lionsledbysheep.com/2008/10/02/thanks/ ) where it's currently available at half price to my blog readers. With your worldview, I'm absolutely sure you'll love it!

Thanks again, Jonathan. Have a great weekend,
Steve

I'm pleased you didn't find the post sappy, Greg. Thanks. Yes, there is a degree of overload. We have to prioritize. The problem is where do we start? Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, wouldn't a good place to start be with all the millions that die needlessly every year in the Third World? Once we get that minor niggle out of the way we can try to tackle the really important issues, can't we?

Yes, we seem to be far too bothered in pandering to the wishes of some overly sensitive minorities while half the world suffers in poverty. You're right - many people are simply way too sensitive and don't appreciate just how good they've got it.

Thanks for visiting, Greg.

The 60s? Yes, I suppose many of the opinions held about what to do with all the world's woes do hark back to the ideology of those days. It's a pity no one listened back then, isn't it, Vivianne? Imagine what the world would be like now. We probably wouldn't even recognise the place!

Let's hope we have more luck this time around, huh?

Thanks for commenting. Don't worry, you aren't alone. There are many who have similar thoughts, and whose voices are growing louder!

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve, I wanted to thank-you for your words. I'm from the 60's times (San Francisco,Calif.) We were asking and saying the same type of things as we found them out. My personal walk in this life is to help save this planet from the power hungry people. I have stories. There are people that are seeing what we see also. They have a name, its 'The Cultural Creatives'. Individuals who feel similar, but don't know there are any one else who feel as they do. People who have the courage to say and do like what your writing about,is very important. Each drop adds to make an ocean. Like the 'clicks' on Care2 site. They all add up to a larger whole. I think that one of the reasons to be alive on this planet is to learn how to co-operate with the different life forces. To learn different then you is not a bad thing. Considerate of others,no matter what they look like (animal, plant, etc.), is important. I think this is the last death spasms, of the hungry for power peoples. 'We the people' can take back our hearts and minds form them, and make this world a more friendlier place to live for all beings. Thank-you again for your words, your helping more people see with hope in their hearts.

I saw the link to this page and I thought it would be some sappy "we must give more" article, or some environmental thing. The I saw the URL and thought, "Ok, whatever it is, it won't be sappy..."

Yet another good article, dude. Too many people are WAY too sensitive these days. Remember that little kid game, where one touches the other and the other yelps? "He touched me!!" We're like little kids these days.

On the other point, I think there's something called "empathy overload." When we're bombarded with worthy causes and ideals. It can be overwhelming and the only defense is to learn to say no, even at the risk of seeming callous.

Excellent article.
