Wiping your Butt on the Stars and Stripes

Believe me, that’s one flag you’re gonna be only too eager to burn!

butt-03-opt.jpg

Picture the scene - The White House, Washington, a beautiful Fourth of July. Over a bucket of southern fried chicken, the President and the First Lady are soaking up some rays in the Rose Garden and discussing who’s been evicted from Big Brother. Suddenly, the biggest squadron of helicopters ever assembled roars overhead. They hover. All their doors slide open. In unison, thousands of passengers hang their bare butts out and… take a dump. The White House, the President and the First Lady are buried under a mountain of–

I think you get the picture.

Now, once my American readers have finished with their death threats, I imagine you’ve got one question. I’ll guess it’s this one - what in hell am I talking about to want to desecrate the American culture so horribly?

‘Desecrate’. Now there’s a good word.

san_francisco_peaks-opt.jpg

Many Native American tribes hold the San Francisco Peaks mountain range of Northern Arizona sacred.

  • The Apache believe souls go there on their way to heaven.
  • The Hopi make pilgrimages there.
  • The Navajo believe them to be the Garden of Eden.

So?

Despite monumental objections from these Indian tribes, a ski resort was built in the 1970s, the courts having decided the mountains belonged to ALL the people, not just the Indians, so a ski resort was the ideal way for ALL the people to benefit.

Zoom ahead 30 years…

Climate change means the mountains have little snowfall. And people can’t ski without snow!

The only solution is to make snow. How?

Every day, they pump 1.5 million gallons of effluent onto the mountain. Yes, effluent. As in what you flush down your toilet!

Despite monumental objections from these Indian tribes… yada, yada, yada…

1.5 million gallons of effluent!

While that’s obviously the most cost-effective means of making artificial snow in Arizona, what would happen if we treated other sacred ground with such utter contempt?

What if we dumped 1.5 million gallons of crap on the Vatican? Would the millions of American Catholics shrug it off? Or would US cities see overturned cars and burning buildings?

How about dumping all that crap on Mecca? Do you think the world’s one billion Muslims would see the funny side? Or would it lead to Armageddon!?

But it’s okay to dump it on a mountain. Okay to crap all over American citizens’ human rights.

But let’s put human rights violations aside for a moment - the way politicians and corporations do.

Okay, so are there any other problems here?

Well, what happens when skiers learn what they’re skiing on? Even if the wonders of modern technology have magically turned the mountains into a winter wonderland, would you like you or your kids to fall flat on your faces in a pile of this, er, ‘snow’?

Of course the effluent that makes this ‘snow’ has been declared safe. As safe as drinking water, in fact. The problem is that’s only because it appears to have been ’selectively’ tested. Extensive testing paints a different picture of this ‘safe drinking water’.

  • Would you like your kids drinking water containing traces of Viagra?
    • Or do you think kids can never have too many erections!?
  • How about the anti-depressant Prozac?
    • Or do your kids have it hard at school so every little helps?
  • And chemicals that can turn male frogs into female frogs?
    • Fine if little Tommy always dreamed of being little Tammy, but should après ski involve watching your son grow breasts?

“Transgender skiing - for the man who has everything. Almost.” An interesting angle for the ski resort’s promotion!

Now, why would corporations believe skiers want to ski not just in other people’s crap, but crap that’s laced with dangerous toxins?

Why? Because there’s big bucks in it!

This is the disdain with which big businesses treat their customers. You see,

  • they’re not in business to please us.
  • they’re not in business to sell us what we need.
  • they’re not in business to keep the economy turning.

No. They’re in business to make profit!

barcode-flag-opt.jpg

And to bleed us dry, corporations will bend some rules and break others.

If we knew what really went on in the business world, on a daily basis, I’m sure a crap-covered mountain would be very pedestrian. Of course, we hear of corporations-

  • occasionally using slave labour in sweatshops.
  • occasionally disposing of waste illegally.
  • occasionally bribing people to help them.

Occasionally!

But how many times do these things happen and we don’t hear about them?

If we’re going to stamp all over the rights of the individual for the sake of profit then aren’t we simply wiping our butts on the constitution, on the flag, on the principles our forefathers fought for and which make western democracy the great institution that it is?

Really, tell me.

I mean, what’s the difference: crapping all over the White House; crapping all over the Indians’ sacred mountains?

But I can imagine many people saying it’s only Indians. Only a minority group. It’s not a major issue, so it doesn’t really matter. Give them some ‘shiny beads’ and send them on their way.

Fair point. Might even work.

And as there’s always some injustice somewhere, what’s the point in sticking your neck out? All pain, no gain!

Another fair point.

Except…

Whose rights will be violated next?

  • The elderly?
  • Christians?
  • Single parents?
  • Children?

But isn’t hardship simply a reality of life?

Yes, because:

  • people have different agendas.
  • they never agree on the best course of action.
  • it’s impossible to please everyone all the time.

Therefore, it’s impossible to end injustice everywhere. So why try?

Why?

Because if no one speaks out against injustice today, who’ll speak out tomorrow if the one being violated is you?

So go. See. Feel. Live.

If you like my blog - the style, the passion, the philosophy - you’ll absolutely love ‘What if…?’, my suspense thriller. What’s it about?

When a mysterious stranger fights to end world poverty, his seeming ability to heal with just a touch catapults him to fame but thrusts him into a deadly struggle with corporate America and the White House that like the world just the way it is: under their control - poverty, disease, wars and all.

But can the stranger truly heal? Or is he the biggest villain of all, perpetrating the most elaborate scam of all time?

Is it any good?

‘”What if…?” is virtually flawless - Lee’s vision is precise, poetic, and skillfully crafted. It’s great writing with a great story, very well told.’
Nicholas Grabowsky, Bestselling Novelist

‘An engaging and exciting thriller with a difference. It would hold its own with many of the books in the bestseller lists - and then some.’

…jap, änd every year the little younger butts of America use worth 250 000 trees for disposable diapers, and the energy and water to produce it…suck
…why on holy earth am I talking about butts??! HMMM ;)

That’s an interesting fact, Pirjo, but I suspect you haven’t read the post as your comment is on a completely different subject.

I’m 63 now…….and when I was 15, living in New England, I felt the same about what I saw happening…..only now, it’s far more profound and in our faces…..
I embrace the thought of letting the young connect the dots these days when the “many” are coming forth to tell the truth, no matter what.

The older “many” have the facts….not opinions.

When are you running for President?

  5. Kent ButlerNo Gravataron 28 Aug 2008 at 10:13 pm

This hasn’t been a democracy since WWII - it is a corporate state run by burbots (bureaucratic robots) all bought and paid for one way or another. “We, the people” allowed it to happen by blindly accepting the lies fed to us by our co-opted government through an all too eager media. It will continue until we decide to take our country back - if that’s still possible.

Whose rights are next to be violated?
    The elderly?
    Christians?
    Single parents?
    Children?
Where have you been? Money we don’t have is being spent to give illegal aliens benefits they don’t deserve and haven’t earned, while Social Security and veteran’s benefits go under-funded, or UNfunded.

Christians have been under attack for years in a nation founded by Christians. Where over 86% of the population believes in God, who is continuing these attacks? Why, the 14% who are agnostics or atheists, the ACLU, and the Feds - what a team!

Children? Johnny still can’t read very well, if at all, and has no idea whether Illinois is a state or a disease. They aren’t taught much English any more, nor math or science. Lots of “feel good” crap, you’re just perfect and nothing is your fault.

Single parents - mostly women - often work two jobs just to support the kids and get accused of neglecting them.

I think I’ve vented enough. Got me started, didn’t you?

Another dandy here, Steve, a damned-good one!
As to the title, here’s how I see it:
The stars and stripes are to represent the United States. Just that, no more, a representation. When one considers how multiple generations have shat upon the land, the forests, the rivers, the streams the oceans, how would wiping your butt with Old Glory be any worse? The way we’ve allowed multiple governments to erode our rights until we have next to none left, why not wipe your butt with the flag? I’d have no problem with it. America is dead, and what we have left of it is a sorry facsimilie which is actually a fascist-police state. Burn the flag, wipe your butt with it, or sew it onto the seat of your pants the way Abbie Hoffman used to do, because it doesn’t mean anything anymore. It only stands for this fascist-police state which is currently seeking to be a global imperial military power.
I know this will piss people off, and I don’t care. It’s my opinion and I’m holding onto it.

We have the right to do whatever we want to with the ‘flag’ This country is scaring me, with big corporations, and people ‘taking over’ other peoples’ rights.

O.K.–I UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT! BURNING OUR STARS & STRIPES & OUR CONFEDERATE FLAG IS A NO-NO! BUT, OUR GOVERMENT REALLY SUCKS! BUSH HAS SPENT 8 YRS. TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY AND HAS DONE A PRETTY DAMN GOOD JOB OF IT! THEY HAVE ALLOWED BIG $$$$ & SPECIAL INTREST TO “ALWAYS” COME BEFORE “WE THE PEOPLE”! HE HAS ALLOWED PROTECTION’S ON OUR ENVIROMENT & WILDLIFE TO BE DESTROYED ALL FOR $$$$$$$$–NOT IN THE INTREST OF THE PEOPLE! WE HAVE A VOICE AND IF WE DON’T START USING IT, WHAT FEW “RIGHTS” WE HAVE LEFT WILL BE GONE! WE PUT THESE IDIOT’S IN OFFICE–WE HAVE THE “RIGHT TO VOTE” AND WE CAN GET THESE IDIOTS OUT! IF WE DON’T USE OUR RIGHT’S–TO STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHT’S–WE ARE LOST! OUR CURRENT GOVERMENT SHOULD BE “DUMPED ON”-THEY DESERVE EVERY OUNCE!

I’m an American (also, a little more than 1/16 Native American Indian, not much, but I’m proud of it) & I agree with you, Steve. This country to going to hell in a handbasket…or should I say, to the sewer on some toilet paper?

  11. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 29 Aug 2008 at 7:58 am

Me? Running for President? Roger, I’m English. But like that’s the only thing stopping me!

While I don’t want to go into ’sales pitch’ mode, my novel explores what would happen if a humanitarian in a position of power tried to change the world. I won’t spoil the story for potential readers, but let’s just say it isn’t a smooth ride. Think about it. All those lovely $$$ slipping through corporate America’s hands - they gonna like that? Or are they going to fight dirty to cling to what they cherish?

I’m sorry to hear you don’t feel things have changed in your lifetime, except to get worse. How sad.

    Thanks for contributing, Roger.

I know just what you mean, Fran. And it’s only going to get scarier! Until we stand up and speak out - in our millions - it’s never going to change, though, is it?

    Thanks, Fran.

Got you started? Let’s hope it gets many people started, Kent. It’s the only way things are ever going to change.

I do like your comment about Illinois! We have many of the same problems here in England. The entire nation is being dumbed-down from the moment they leave the crib. There was a time you went to school to learn Maths and English, etc, but these days, as you say, those seem secondary to being able to feel good about yourself and being swathed in ‘politically correct’ bubble-wrap. You won’t believe what passes for English in our Universities, these days. Texting on cell phones is partly to blame of course, but the main culprit is education - people simply can’t tell the difference between good English and bad English. I tell you, it’s embarrassing to see what some people think is a well-formed sentence.

Thanks for adding to the discussion, Kent.

    Thanks everyone. Great comments,
    Steve

That’s such a sad, sad comment, Louise! Possibly the saddest comment this blog has ever received!

‘We the people’ was always going to be a loser against $$$, Brenda, wasn’t it? Unfortunately, the right to vote means absolutely squat if you’ve no one to vote for with the courage and humanity to want to change anything.

Yes, Bush has destroyed so much of America, both the tangible, like your wilderness areas, and intangible, like your international reputation. I can’t see anyone repairing either anytime soon. Can you?

Unfortunately, I believe there’s a no-fly zone over the White House so he’ll never get his just deserts!

    Thanks, Brenda.

Yes, you should be proud of your heritage, Denise. Ancestry like that makes you special. I hope you’ve found the time and resources to be able to explore your ancient roots.

Yep, sewer and some toilet paper. Not that America is alone. Europe suffers many of the same horrors - money put above people. As for the rest of the world, well, we all know what goes on in Africa and the East with regards to human rights, don’t we? And I can’t see Australasia being far behind us. (Maybe regular contributor Glenda might stop by and shed some light on that, if we’re lucky.)

Yep, we’ve really built a world to be proud of, haven’t we!?

    Thanks, Denise.

    Have a great weekend everyone,
    Steve

  14. patricia lasekNo Gravataron 29 Aug 2008 at 11:36 am

Personally, I love the idea of dumping all that s**t on our illustrious first family. They’ve been doing it to us for a long time, along with all the rest of their corporate cronies.

  15. patricia lasekNo Gravataron 29 Aug 2008 at 11:41 am

I believe thay feel that we have no rights because rights only belong to an elite few. Our country has spiralled downward since it’s founding. The constitution is constantly being violated. If Bush and his cronies had their way, the word “RIGHTS” would be totally eliminated.

  16. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 29 Aug 2008 at 11:58 am

You certainly made me smile with your first comment, Patricia. And I’m sure many readers will know exactly what you are talking about, as indeed will citizens of most ‘developed’ countries, with regards to being dumped on by those in control.

Yes, rights are ellusive, aren’t they? There you are, happily going about your business and believing you have a whole bunch of rights, then, out of the blue something happens and, would you believe it, all those precious rights you thought you had have only up and scarpered, haven’t they!

Still, it does give you a warm glow knowing just how super intelligent the powers that be truly are, doesn’t it? I mean, to be able to sidestep and violate so many rights and get away with it… Well, you gotta be some kinda a genius, huh?

Thanks for contributing, Patricia. Have a wonderful weekend,
    Steve

  17. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 29 Aug 2008 at 3:16 pm

Tim, I’m afraid your comment was caught by my spam/foul language filter, so sorry for the delay in getting it posted. (Though, the ‘language’ is fine by me, but the vocabularly loaded into the software obviously took issue with it!)

I’m pleased you didn’t take offence at the title or intro to the post. To be honest, I’m quite surprised at just how everyone is being so positive - I’d envisioned at least one ignoramus wanting to beat me to a pulp to protect the honour of the cloth and voicing such. Now, would my filter have saved me from that!?

As you say, I’m sure that anyway who objects to my title will also be livid by your opinions - funny how these people are so proud of the flag and yet, conveniently, forget that pesky little ‘freedom of speech’ thing, isn’t it?

But you’re right - the errosion of people’s rights has been going on for decades and shows no sign of ending. On the path upon which America is set, I can’t see any possibility of that changing in the near future regardless of who’s discussing Big Brother in the Rose Garden. A sorry state of affairs, in deed. I’ve discussed possible ways out of this situation here:

    http://www.lionsledbysheep.com/2008/05/08/lazy/

    and here:

    http://www.lionsledbysheep.com/2008/08/14/americans/

but, let’s face it, people have it too easy to be so bothered about their freedoms being eroded to do anything truly meaningful - it would simply be too much effort - unless they suddenly fell foul of the powers that be, but then it would be too late.

Thanks for a valuable contribution, Tim. Enjoy your weekend,
    Steve

Ah, another wild Steve post. Always have to read past the headline. Sure, it’s likely to have a bit of anti-American rant to it, but it’ll be an interesting one.

The remarks about Bush in the comments are hilarious. And we’re going to elect Comrade Obama next? That sends some of us into fits of giggling.

Keep in mind that for all the bad things the corps have brought to us Government has brought far worse. Sing the glories of excess Gov and look at the ecological paradise left by the Soviet Union. I’m not Entirely sure that anyone in Europe/Britain should be ranting too much about US excesses. Kinda smacks of that “H” word, ya know?

And people want MORE government? At least the Corps are subject to market forces and are somewhat responsive.

Kinda like you said in your post, “And to bleed us dry, Governments will bend some rules and break others.”

Now, the Shit on the Mountain is jaw dropping and it is certainly a spit in the eye to the Indians (not that Britain or Europe is innocent of such things.) It’ll be interesting to see what happens what that hits the proverbial fan. Get the news out there, see their stock prices drop a bit, and they’ll shape up faster than any Gov entity. Don’t get the news out and we’ll get more shit.

By the way, the lack of snow is a cyclic condition. It’ll be back in a few years.

By the way #2 - Cute pic to lead off the post.

I’m a US-born US citizen, and I have no idols. So, no death threats. And having just returned from a set of mountains where my family and I took a brief sabbatical, this just ices the cake of a fairly political week topped by the funky announcement of the opposition party this morning. I’ve sent this entry far and wide, and you have my heartiest thanks for your continued expert expression! :-)

  21. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 30 Aug 2008 at 11:38 am

Thanks, Brenda. I’m so pleased you liked this post.

Yes, your government did let you down badly of Katrina - even we learned of it here in Britain. A disgraceful show of disrespect and lack of compassion and empathy for its own people. I hope you escape the next hurricane.

November? Yep, it looks like a lose:lose scenario. But to be honest, I haven’t followed the ’show’ so much - it all the same old crap just tarted up in a different guise to fool the voters into caring, isn’t it?

Thanks for stopping by to add further to the discussion, Brenda.

Well, AJ, what can I say? Thank you for your vote of confidence and for any help you can give in spreading the issues that we should all be concerned about. It’s much appreciated. I hope you and your family had a great vacation - pity you always have to come crashing back down to earth though afterwards, isn’t it?

Funky announcement? I’m afraid I’m not up to speed on that - a busy day and it sometimes takes a while for news to filter across the Atlantic!

Have a great weekend. Thanks again,
    Steve

  22. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 30 Aug 2008 at 11:56 am

Greg, nearly lost you there! Like Tim’s comment above, my filter took exception to a couple of words you’d used. Luckily I didn’t, so I rescued it. Sorry for the delay.

The “H” word? Is that a typo? Don’t you mean the “T” word, as in TRUTH?

As for who’s done the most damage, corporations or the government? Well, that depends on who you believe controls who!

Market forces? You should read some of my posts on consumerism (another coming soon, more targeted at this problem). Market forces play a role, yes, but how often do corporations manufacture a market for a product we don’t need?

I’m pleased you like the ‘jaw-dropping’ aspect of the post, i.e. the crap-covered mountain and the desecration of the Indians’ holy land, but I’m a little mystified that you see it as an anti-American rant. Really.

    Anti-government manipulation? Yes!
    Anti-corporation greed? Yes!
    Anti-American? Most definitely NO!

Yes, initially the USA’s culture comes under fire, but that’s only because the Indians’ story, upon which the entire post is based, is US specific. I don’t go on to talk about America and the Amercian people, but simply generalize about government and business. I’m sorry if you took it the wrong way and read it as an attack on America itself and the American people - it wasn’t meant to be at all.

Thanks for visiting and adding other elements to the discussion for readers to think about, Greg. Have a great weekend,
    Steve

P.S. The ‘rant’ next week will also have a US flavour. BUT… you’ll be pleased to hear that I have found statistics on Britain that I’ll use, too! My little island has its own problems and quirks, but those have far less impact on the world, so it’s only natural that most posts, if applicable, discuss the US with any other nation secondary.

P.P.S Cute pic? With a title like that, it was either something cute or something gross. So, what you gonna do!?

Another hard hitting, in your face post Steve on an issue which I was unaware of ’til I saw it posted some weeks ago. Yet another example of corporate greed vs human rights imo.
While I am American, I have no loyalties to those who seek to control and manipulate the American people for profit. This covers not only Big Bu$ine$$, but elected officials and appointed ones.
The Native American treaties violated by the federal govt. are too numerous to name and yet, these proud Americans have little support from the rest of America. It’s as if the rest of America doesn’t care and maybe they don’t. Perhaps citizens feel these broken promises have no effect on their lives, but are sadly mistaken if so. What the feds do to one, they will surely do to others if they feel the need to. Owned by the power hungry execs, nothing is sacred or off limits in America. Human life is only a number and is expendable if required. Health and the welfare of the people are secondary to profit. One need only to look to the US health-care system to see the above, or the survivors of Katrina who STILL are without proper housing. And yet… those who are high in the hierarchy are provided for.
So send in the ‘copters, send the message ‘We’re mad as hell and we won’t take it anymore’ and see how fast the private mercenaries paid for by taxpayers react to the threat of terrorism against those in power.
    On another note…
Steve, like you I am mortified with the lack of language skills most people seem to have these days. Although not confined to the UK, the ignorance (is it self imposed?) I see is appalling. A direct result of the dumbing down of society so we are easy to control. ha! as if…
Have faith Steve, not all of us are silenced by illiteracy! :D

  25. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 31 Aug 2008 at 12:55 pm

You’ve picked up on a point that I only hinted at there, Kim, as the post was already long at nearly 1000 words, so I couldn’t expand. “… these proud Americans have little support from the rest of America.” It’s as if they aren’t even viewed as American, despite them being ‘more’ American than the ‘average’ American and because of that, they don’t deserve the same rights.

Don’t worry, though, as it’s not only American, money-hungry execs that are causing the problems - we have our share, too. It’s a virulent virus for which there’s no known cure! Well, short of death and hoping the next generation have a natural immunity. Good job our education system is in such great shape!

A lot of ignorance is self-imposed. People can choose to learn more about the world, choose not to be apathetic, choose to use a capital letter to start a sentence! That’s the problem - and a topic for another post. Yes, the government and corporations keep us down, but we let them because it’s so much effort to fight against them. Self-imposed dumbing down.

    Thanks, Kim. Great points.

Viriginia, you should have seen some of the photos I could’ve chosen - gross and grosser! Believe me, you do NOT want ‘less cute’! With my posts on death, hunger, poverty, etc, all featuring their fair share of upsetting images, I do like to go for happy, inspiring, or, as in this case, cute if the opportunity arises. And being a guy, was there any real chance that a cute pic of someone’s butt was going to be of a ‘cute’ guy’s!? Apart from anything, I wouldn’t know what constituted a cute guy’s butt! With regards to the female behind, though, well, as if evident, I think I’ve got the ‘cute’ aspect cracked there!

Plus, there was a serious angle to using such a picture. Images are shown in some search engines and on some social networking sites so by using one like that it could inspire someone to read the post and become interested in this subject who wouldn’t normally have bothered. Okay, that will maily work only with men, but, as I said above, I wouldn’t know where to start to attract women. Apart from that, either way - a male or a female butt - I’d have only pleased half the population and disappointed the other.

I’m pleased you like the post, though, Virginia. Thanks for the dropping by and commenting. (There seems to have been some sort of glitch when you were submitting, so I’ve deleted the duplicate posts.)

    Thanks,
    Steve

First they’d never make it over the white house, they get shot down. (unless of course there would be a no fly order as was the case on 9/11/01). Why do the greedy do what they do, would be a better question? Because they got rich by being numb to anybody and everybody else feelings. I often wonder why they stole Geronimo’s head and why nothing has ever been done about it.
    http://www.petitiononline.com/Geronimo/petition.html

As for the American Flag,, I haven’t flown the ole girl since bush illegally invaded Iraqi. But she is still neatly folded up in the closet. I’m not mad at the Flag and our Flag deserves the respect our family members have fought for. But at the same time, I hate to see the Flag dragged into this mess. Dirty politicians, corrupt corporations, double standards for the rich and famous and the poor working peons. That’s America these days. However America isn’t the only country afflicted with the greed disease. I still say Princess Diana was murdered.

  27. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 31 Aug 2008 at 1:18 pm

Someone stole Geronimo’s head? Well, that’s the strangest thing I’ve heard in quite a while, Kathy.

Diana? Yeah, there’s something just not right about that story. Much the same as JFK, etc.

I don’t think we English look on the flag the same as Americans. Oh, we’ll wave it about at international sports meetings, etc, but we don’t generally fly it. While it could start a whole race/integration argument - ‘we’ feel we have to please every single nationality to ever set foot on our little island - I think we are losing our national identity to some degree by embracing other cultures while sidelining our own for fear of alienating some minority! Flying the flag would not necessarily make a scrap of difference, but it could be a step in the right direction - being proud of our accomplishments.

In that sense, the U.S. has us beaten hands down. You really could teach us a thing or two and I sincerely wish you would.

Britain has always struggled with class discrimination, so I know how you feel. The problem is, how do you fight it without doing something drastic?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Kathy. Hope you’re able to take that flag out again sometime soon!

Great post and Killer Title. You should have won the prize.

You speak the truth. Unfortunately people are too busy thinking about their personal fun to care about the spirituality of the world.

Thanks, Rob, glad you liked the post, and the title!

Yep, that’s the big problem isn’t - people are simply too comfortable these days to want to rock the boat. Great. Means things will inevitably get worse before they get better, if they ever do.

Good title on your post, too. I’ll check that out. Thanks for the link.

As an American, I was not in the least offended by your title. In fact, between you, me, and the U.S./U.K. authourities monitoring our e-mails, there have been times I’ve burned an American flag. The last time was on the day that Iraq was invaded. I haven’t wiped my ass with one (yet), but check me again after election day.

I’ve felt this way for a lot of years, Steve; elevating a flag, a piece of cloth, to the status of a semi-holy object is just wrong. I was about 14 yrs. old when I stopped reciting The Pledge of Allegiance in school. It occured to me one day that swearing blind allegiance to any flag, any country, runs against the very grain of Liberty.

I’m not voting this November. I, along with a lot of others, am convinced that the only reason we even still have elections in the states is to maintain the illusion that “We The People” still make the decisions as to who our leaders will be. I feel that participating in these fraudulent elections is to give my imprimatur of approval to the whole thing. I would not be surprised to learn that your elections are as fraudulent as ours are. I just find it too hard to believe that so many Britons really liked Tony Blair that much to legitimately vote him in; same with George W. Bush. It’s obvious the man is a drooling, mouth-breathing idiot, and we knew it during the 2000 campaign. His record was well-known by then. People knew that everything he’d ever put his hand to, business-related, had turned to shit. But, the Supreme Court, staffed mostly by justices of his father’s and Ronald Reagan’s choosing, selected Bush to be President……which is how we got into the mess we’re in now.

Great post, Steve! Upon initially viewing the title, I envisioned what the body of the post would encompass and that was some form of anti-American sentiment. I already felt my blood pressure climb a wee bit, in preparation for the adrenaline rush from my impending “fight or flight” response. I knew it was going to be a fight response. HOWEVER, to my delightful surprise, I WAS SERIOUSLY MISTAKEN! You made terrific points and I thoroughly agreed with all that was written, (through my tearful laughter)!
I found myself yelling, “Yeah, yeah…that’s right!” I only wish I had the time to visit “Lions Led By Sheep” more often. It would do my heart a world of good!

I know just what you mean about patriotism, Pete. Being proud of your country, of its achievements, of its culture is fine, but it should be tempered with simple common sense. If it isn’t, you end up lynching people for making use of that pesky ‘freedom of speech’ thing that we’re all so proud of. You can’t pledge undying devotion to a system that has flaws, to put it mildly!

You do have a point - fixed elections would certainly explain why all our politicians, regardless of party, seem as bland and as incompetent as each other. I must say, I don’t envy America’s November dilemma!

Anyway, thanks for your message, Pete, and I’m pleased you enjoyed my post.

Oh, thank you, Karen, you’re so kind.

You might not believe it from the number of comments here, but this has been one of my least read posts! That’s entirely due to the title and people assuming they know what it’s about - and automatically hating it and probably hating me! A pity. I’m sure they’d find true value in it if they had the common sense you obviously have and they could see past their short-sightedness and misplaced loyalty, and didn’t simply judge a book by its cover, which let’s face it, is always a mistake.

It’s always pleasing if I hit the nail on the head, so thanks for letting me know I did as far as you’re concerned. I don’t know how much coverage the mountain story has had in the U.S., but I thought it was a wonderful example of how we’ll trample over anything and everything in our quest for the holy dollar.

I hope you find time to call back again soon. Have a great week, Karen.

  35. Terrie W.No Gravataron 05 Sep 2008 at 2:25 pm

Brilliant as usual, Steve! I can’t elaborate on all that has been said because all of it has been crystal clear and well expressed. They are also my sentiments on the situation in my country–land of the SLAVES and home of the CHUMPS. WE the people let this happen. ALL OF US.

I am rather fond of what Thomas Jefferson thought and spoke of out loud…(paraphrasing), “A little revolution now and then is a good thing”.

Maybe it’s time, once again, to cast off the shackles of tyranny? JMHO. I am NOT inciting to riot–riots do nothing but get people killed..usually innocent people at that. No. Rioting is not the answer. Voting doesn’t cut it either this time around because it is all of the same–one party, different spin. Although we could do a massive write-in for prez and veep, but most will not go for that either, therefore, nothing will be accomplished or changed. I do not condone violence.

However, revolution can be non-violent! It can! At least on the side of those ‘yearning to be free’. But that does mean that many will be slaughtered for the sake of change. If Gandhi and the Indian peoples could do it, why can we not employ the same passive, non-aggressive tactics that he and they employed? Something to ponder…but then again, for all that we as a nation of many so love to piss and bitch and moan from the comfort and convenience of our homes, how many of us ARE mentally, emotionally and spiritually prepared and ready to do such a thing? To possibly lay down our lives for the sake of our nation to once again see it free? To lay down our lives through passivity so that our children will have the once upon a time (what we used to have and so blithely took for granted) ability to seek to be their own persons and their own destinies? To better education, to better medical care, to better housing, to affordable food and clothing TO THE RIGHT TO SAY AND DO AS WAS CONSTITUTIONALLY GIVEN AS RIGHTS TO OUR PERSONS!!!! How many?

I love my country. I believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights for ALL Americans. I WILL defend them to my death. I AM READY.

PS: American Indian Nations are SOVEREIGN ENTITIES UNTO THEMSELVES and should by LAW and by TREATY have the RIGHT to keep land and/or what is sacred, SACRED. We do NOT have the right to take their lands or their sacred places and do with them what the corporate wills. NO! It is a shameful and embarrassing thing to me as an American of both White and Native blood to have to own–our government has NEVER HONORED ONE TREATY!!!!!! Maybe now is the time to remedy that as well.

(Damn, Steve, and I wasn’t going to comment LOL).

  36. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 05 Sep 2008 at 2:38 pm

Terrie, as usual, you make some great points.

Yes, a revolution that doesn’t involve getting your butt blown off is far more appealing that one that sees blood in the streets. I’ve given my thoughts and spoken about various options before in posts like these:

    http://www.lionsledbysheep.com/2008/05/08/lazy/
    http://www.lionsledbysheep.com/2008/06/26/how/
    http://www.lionsledbysheep.com/2008/08/14/americans/

But, as I’ve said before, how could we achieve a peaceful revolution? A general strike? Boycotting a major election? Using our wallets to fight for us by only buying the absolute necessities?

It would be terrific if we could have such a revolution, but people are simply too comfortable with their lives to want to rock the boat. It’s sad, but true.

I really don’t know how to get through to them other than by trying to raise awareness in my posts and novel. But so many people are incredibly blinkered and can’t see the truth about how their being manipulated and taken for a ride even when it’s right there in front of them. It’s the world’s biggest problem. bigger than hunger and poverty!

Let’s hope that the small changes we make become contagious and snowball into something bigger than we ever thought possible.

    Great comment, Terrie.

I must say, it is heartening to see that so many people really are tuned in to what’s going on in the world today.

Let’s hope it spreads across the internet and through word of mouth, and one day soon we can finally see some changes worth celebrating, changes that don’t involve balance sheets, tickertape parades, or nepatistic back slapping by corporate thieves!

    Have a great weekend everyone,

Hi Steve…. first, I totally LOVE your thoughts, opinions & the truth!! I wish you were here!! What’s funny is that I never knew the fake snow was made of of sh… that’s actually hysterical.
Personally, I don’t ski, but LMAO!! I dream of the day that everyone here in the f-ed up USA would wake up out of their coma and stand up for themselves and each other. It sucks living here, there is no freedom - please! They poison our water just to try and keep everyone in a dazed & confused state, prescriptions drugs just “happen” to be there too.. it’s like wtf is going on.
Also about a year ago in Chicago the mayor was trying to pass some ordinance that bottled water could not be sold, or increase taxes for people using bottled water - can you believe it. It was so rediculous and I don’t recall the outcome, whether he put one hell of a tax on it or what.
I try not to watch the news too ofter, it just upsets me. But what really pisses me off to no end is that no one will speak out, and if we try and do it just individually, they’ll lock you up for life - patriot act ya know. What a joke, I won’t even get started on my opinion of that crap. Three quarters of the people here seem to think things are just fine - makes me want to rap them on the head and say wake up. Then to top it off, they make it close to impossible to try and leave the country, like we’re trapped here. The economy here is terrible, but of course on the news it says that the white house says the economy is good. Whatever!
And, I agree with Roger - WILL YOU PLEASE RUN FOR PRESIDENT HERE!!!

  39. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 05 Sep 2008 at 2:59 pm

    Hi Joanne,

    Thanks for your kind comments.

President? Now, as I’ve said before, this isn’t a sales pitch, but read my novel ‘What if…?’ and see what happens when a humanitarian with power goes up against corporate America and the political carnivores. As you can imagine, it’s not a pretty sight! (Shock of shocks, they don’t play fair!) Do I really want to put myself through that?

Still, it’s nice to know I’d get at least 2 votes!

Yes, making snow out of water from your toilet. Kind of ruins that perfect Christmas image a little, too.

You’re right about not enough people speaking out, Joanne. The problem is, so few even know there’s anything to speak out against - as you point out. I don’t know how we’ll ever work things out to get the world we deserve, but if we don’t, we’ll end up with a world that no one wants because it’ll be in such a state.

Thanks for a valuable contribution to the conversation, Joanne. Have a great weekend,
    Steve

    Hi Steve
Some may not be able to get past those shiney buns lol
but seriously that is gross. I got in an argument with the pharmacist because they won’t take meds I didn’t need back. She told me to flush em down the toilet.
Well, I said that was really bad advice because of the contamination of ground water. The treatment plants have no way of removing these drugs.
We live in the country and have an old over the hill sewer. We use all natural cleaners but any prescription drugs we are taking will end up somewhere in the ground water. I am working to change all treatments to using herbs. Our Doctor uses holistic and homeopathic treatments but insurance does not pay for those (can’t make any money off of them and are trying to outlaw their use, even vitamins!).
Actually, I wish someone would crap on the current president, he deserves it. I believe he is on prozac too.
This country would be more accurately called the Greedy Corporations of America not the United States of America.
There are a lot of big changes needed here and they aren’t going to let that be easy. Divide, scare the hell out of, suck them dry of all money and rights and conquer is their motto. They don’t give a crap who they hurt!

    Good eye catcher title lol
    Blessings,
    Peace Dreamer

  41. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 05 Sep 2008 at 5:00 pm

    Hey Peace Dreamer,

It’s hard to believe that in an age when everyone is supposed to be environmentally aware - especially professionals who deal with deadly compounds on a daily basis - the best advice you can find to deal with drugs you don’t need is to flush them down the toilet.

Unless of course you’ve got a magic toilet that literally does make things disappear the way many people imagine!

If only we had a few of those dotted around the planet, huh?

And banning herbal remedies is criminal in itself! Isn’t aspirin derived from a plant? Or is it whether you can patent a compound of chemicals and make a fat profit or not that matters more than people’s health?

I’m pleased to see you believe we’re being manipulated and frightened so we’re easier to control - you’d be amazed to learn how many people have disagreed with me over that! But then, when you look at the state of the world and how most people don’t care, probably you wouldn’t be amazed at all.

Thanks for furthering the discussion with some great points, Peace Dreamer.

The native Americans remind me so much of Australians Indigenous people. White man came, “conqured” and pretty much desecrated their culture, land and way of life.

This ski resort sounds like what we have done to Uluru ( Ayres Rock )
Uluru was “handed back” to the indigenous people in the 1980’s by the government. There are signs up everywhere asking people not to climb the rock but when we visited, there were hundreds of tourist’s all over it, and leaving rubbish everywhere. This is a sacred site and if you are lucky enough to visit it you can feel the spirits from thousands of years ago. I actually started crying watching people disrespect such a wonderful, spiritual place.

I could go on and on with the way white Australians have treated our first people and the way we think they should live, it’s a subject that is very close to my heart.

    Great post again Steve.

  43. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 08 Sep 2008 at 1:27 pm

Thanks, Glenda. It’s always great when you comment as you can add such a unique perspective - I think you’re my only regular Australian reader.

It’s reassuring to know that the US, UK, and Western countries aren’t alone in this and that even nations at the other side of the globe are just as bad as we are. Reassuring, but very saddening. But then it’s only to be expected as Australia is so closely related to us. It would be unusual if you were different!

On our summer trip to the US, Ania and I bought a back country pass so we could hike in The Furnace in Arches National Park. For want of a simple description, it’s a complex maze of tiny rock canyons. Very beautiful and absolutely fascinating. Very few people visit it. Especially as you have to pay extra, not just the park admission. That didn’t stop someone carelessly discarding a water bottle, though, which I took away for recycling. I’d like to think it was dropped accidentally, but how many times do you have to say that to yourself before it rings way too hollow?

But it’s the same everywhere - literally! From the Grand Canyon to the Great Wall of China, people revere these magnificent places and yet think nothing of destroying them through nothing but sheer laziness and irresponsibility.

I’ve seen Uluru on TV. I hope to see it properly one day. I can imagine why you were moved.

Thanks for a fresh insight on another nation. Enjoy your week, Glenda.

Since the USA Flag seems outdated and not really a true representation of the current USA, what would the new Flag look like…

Oh, wait… That flag, That symbol, was already used by the Nazi Fascists…

Guess we’ll have to come up with a new design similar to it, the Nazi Fascist flag, and it would become a no-no to wipe your butt with the new “Flag Symbol” least the “new” fascists might get smeared with shat.

  45. Steve N. LeeNo Gravataron 25 Sep 2008 at 10:06 pm

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the comment. Though, if memory serves, ‘that’ symbol wouldn’t be such a bad one to adopt - wasn’t the swastika originally a peace sign in the Far East?

But, yes, I get your drift. I think the only thing representative of the current US is green with a picture of Benjamin Franklin on it! (Mind you, that’s only representative of a certain demographic. Sadly, a very large, and often powerful demographic!)
